A look at Jesus’ inner circle

DOCUMENTARY
“The Twelve Apostles”
(The History Channel, airs Dec. 20 at 9:00 p.m. eastern)

“The Twelve Apostles,” a two-hour documentary about the inner circle of Jesus’ followers, will debut Dec. 20 on the History Channel. It repeats Christmas day at 10:00 a.m. eastern.

Actor Martin Sheen narrates the film, which follows the apostles -- Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the Lesser, Thaddeus, Simon, and Judas -- from their first meeting with Jesus to the death of John in the late first century. Bible scholars from a wide variety of perspectives and faith traditions provide the commentary.

The first hour of the film is devoted to the life of Jesus and the first stirrings of the Christian movement. The second hour examines Christian legends about the later exploits of each of the apostles.

Paulist Fr. Ellwood Kieser, maker of the feature films “Romero” and “Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story,” is the documentary’s executive producer.
