Inside NCR
This is a week for
introductions.
NCR is a vital and healthy enterprise because of a lot of
people whose responsibilities range well beyond the newsroom. They dont
get bylines every week, but they should. Without the folks in other areas --
advertising, marketing, purchasing, computer and Web services, business and
accounting, graphic arts, list management, circulation and customer service,
and the mail department -- our work would never reach you.
NCR has two new faces in its marketing department, Charlie
Owens and Rachel Hill. The department markets NCR, the newsweekly, and
also Celebration, an ecumenical worship resource, and three newsletters,
Eucharistic Minister, The Caring Community and The
Catechists Connection.
Owens, 58, who spent 30 years in sales and marketing management
for the Knight-Ridder newspaper chains Financial Information Division,
recently joined NCR Publishing Co. as director of marketing.
Owens went in search of a second career when the division was
purchased in 1996 and he faced the prospect of relocating. As he terms it,
curiosity and a bit of luck led him to answer a local ad and,
ultimately, to place his impressive experience and resumé at the service
of the NCR effort.
What attracted me initially, he said, was the
challenge I saw in helping to increase the subscriber base and to further the
mission of the publications. I felt that I could make a genuine contribution
and I had a sincere belief that the contribution would be
appreciated.
Rachel Hill, 22, a May graduate of the Jesuits Rockhurst
University in Kansas City, Mo., with a major in business communications, is the
new assistant director of marketing. She previously worked at NCR as a
marketing intern for the previous marketing director, Jessica Ovel, who left
NCR in August for studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
In addition, we recently welcomed
Rebecca Lackey, 22, a May graduate of Kansas State University, with a major in
graphic design, as assistant layout editor.
She didnt take long to make an impression. This weeks
center spread is her work.
