Memorandum from J. Augustine Di Noia, OP
regarding: Draft of a Report on the Enneagram
Memorandum
To: All Bishops
From: J. Augustine Di Noia, OP. Secretariat for Doctrine
and Pastoral Practices
Subject: Draft of a Report on the Enneagram
Date: July 7, 2000
The Committee on Doctrine has asked our office to forward you a
draft report on the Enneagram which has been prepared under the
Committees supervision at the request of the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith.
In the expectation that the bishops of our conference might find
it helpful to have background information on the Enneagram and its use in some
circles as a tool of spiritual development, the Committee determined that the
report should be made available to you. In order to serve this purpose, the
report will eventually be published as a resource paper prepared by the staff
of the Doctrine Committee. It will be accompanied by a brief Notification,
signed by the Doctrine Committee chairman, Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk,
advising that the theory and practice of the Enneagram raises serious doctrinal
concerns when employed as a methodology of spiritual growth.
Before publishing the text in its final form, the penultimate
draft of the report is being sent to all the bishops at the present time to
give you the opportunity to comment upon it and to refine it. The Doctrine
Committee would be grateful to receive any comments you may have by September
5, 2000.
